Our Mission

Cairn Hill brings the transformative power of the arts to young learners in urban and multi-ethnic communities using nature, story, music, and the hands-on approach inspired by Waldorf education.

History

In September 2012, Cairn Hill created and piloted our first after school program at the Salemwood School in Malden, Massachusetts. The program included music clay modeling, wood working and connecting to nature. The centerpiece of our the program was a storytelling curriculum called The Art of Word Weaving. It’s a resource we developed to make oral comprehension and word retention easy, memorable and fun! Learn about the Art of Word Weaving

In September, 2013 we partnered with the Somerville, MA Community Schools to offer a version of our curriculum entitled Story Play, an afternoon club of arts, music, crafts and drumming built around story themes. This second pilot phase in Somerville allowed us to fine tune our program and serve the needs of a wide range of learners. Learn more about our Somerville program.

Since the spring of 2014, Cairn Hill has been collaborating with the Linden STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) Academy in Malden. Our Arts Innovation programs introduce children to a full array of artistic projects accompanied by lively stories and vocabulary instruction, which are presented using Waldorf teaching methods. Themes of the natural world drawn from school day academic content form the basis of the curriculum. For instance, the children are introduced to the concept of life cycles by building and planting a school garden. They experience springtime sights and sounds with plenty of nature games and discoveries.
